Tempo: The Secret to Better Muscle Growth

When it comes to building muscle, it’s not just about how much weight you lift. How you move the weight matters too.

Tempo is the speed at which you perform each phase of an exercise. By controlling your tempo, you can increase muscle tension, improve your technique, and make every repetition more effective.

As the Refining Fire graphic explains, physique goals require more than just moving weight. Control the weight. Control the tempo. Build the physique.

What Is Tempo?

Tempo refers to the different phases of an exercise:

1. Bottom Position

This is the stretched position and represents the pre-engage phase.

2. Concentric Lift

This is the lifting portion of the movement. Lift with purpose as the muscle shortens.

3. Top Position

At the top of the movement, focus on full contraction and squeeze the muscle.

4. Eccentric Lower

This is the lowering portion of the exercise. Lower under control as the muscle lengthens.

The graphic emphasizes that the eccentric phase is particularly important because it should be performed under control rather than allowing the weight to fall.

Concentric vs. Eccentric

Concentric

The concentric phase is when you lift with purpose. This is the effort phase as the muscle shortens.

Eccentric

The eccentric phase is when you lower under control. This is an important part of the movement as the muscle lengthens.

Instead of simply moving the weight from one position to another, focus on controlling the entire movement.

Why Tempo Matters

Tempo is the speed that ties both phases together.

The exact tempo won’t be the same for every exercise, so your workout tempo should be appropriate for the movement you’re performing.

The most important thing is to stay present throughout the movement, especially during the eccentric portion.

Don’t simply rush through your repetitions. Control the weight, maintain your technique, and make every repetition count.

Make Every Rep Count

Better training isn’t always about adding more weight. Sometimes, it’s about getting more out of the weight you’re already using.

Focus on:

  • Controlled movement
  • Purposeful lifting
  • Full contraction
  • Controlled lowering
  • Staying present throughout the repetition
  • Using an appropriate tempo for each exercise
